Notes of Thanks to HON Volunteers
from Flood-Impacted Homeowners
HON volunteers were quick to respond to community needs when the flood waters receded in early May. Since then, 19,000+ volunteers donated over 75,000 hours at more than 1,000 project sites. Many letters have been arriving at the HON offices from flood survivors who send thanks to all of HON’s volunteers. Below is a sampling of those letters.
“In the recent disaster of floods, I was amazed at the outpouring of volunteers. My situation was one of real need for help, as my husband was recently disabled. The volunteers were all energetic, hard workings, and very sincere in their caring for the community.” ~ Debra W.
“Our home was flooded May 2 with 4.5 feet of water. Many volunteers from your organization showed up and helped us remove all of the debris. We are still about two weeks from moving back home, but we wouldn’t be this far along without your help. We wanted to take the time to let you know how much it was appreciated!” ~ Steve and Barbara J.
“To all the wonderful volunteers at Hands On Nashville. You brought the sun back into our lives by giving us your time and your fellowship. Our gratitude knows no words as "thank you" doesn’t seem to be enough. Thank You! ~ John M. and Nancy M.
“We just wanted to say thank you for helping us out after our house was flooded. The extra volunteers were a huge help and greatly appreciated.” ~Rebecca and Shane B.

LP PENCIL Box
PENCIL Foundation has been serving Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) since 1982. In 2005, PENCIL Foundation and LP Building Products collaborated to form the LP PENCIL Box (LPPB) to alleviate some of the financial burden confronting public school teachers. This free school supply store is open to all MNPS teachers and is unique because it operates through support and donations from the Nashville community. Each Metro teacher is invited to shop in the store once per semester, leaving with an average of $250.00 of free supplies on each visit to be used in their classroom.
Since its inception, LPPB has been a valuable educational resource for the Nashville community and has:
Served 145,420 public school students.
Distributed $1,831,681 worth of school supplies to MNPS teachers.
Recorded 7,271 shopping visits from public school teachers.
Logged 13,184 volunteer hours.
Received $2,010,014.32 worth of in-kind donations.
The program is only successful through the wonderful help of volunteers and LPPB is in constant need of volunteers. Teachers can shop on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 7:00pm and Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Volunteers are needed on these days to help with inventorying donations, restocking the store, assisting with teacher shopping. Volunteers as young as 14 years old are welcome as well as groups of volunteers.

The next Start Now volunteer training sessions will be held at the NALC Antioch location on August 17 from 6:00 to 8:30pm. As a Start Now volunteer, you can register for as many or as few hour time slots that fit your monthly schedule.
