Disaster Relief:
Ready, Set, Prepare!
Since the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina in the
Gulf, the topic of disaster readiness and
preparedness has been thrust to the forefront. In
our heightened awareness of it, many have begun to
question what role, if any, kids can or should play
in such a heavy topic. After Katrina, kids wanted to
play a role in the recovery and rebuilding efforts
and were only able to heal after they were given
real opportunities to help. We feel young people can
play an important role in disaster preparation.
Ready, Set, Prepare! activities are designed to
encourage kids to learn more about natural
disasters, how they can best prepare for them and
how they can be of service to others during times of
crisis.
Project Ideas:
1. Tour the Salvation Army facilities, paying
particular attention to the mobile canteen used to
feed those displaced after a disaster. Learn about
the Salvation Army’s role in disaster preparedness
and response.
2. Prepare disaster kits for either the Salvation
Army or the Red Cross.
3. Schedule an Office of Emergency Management Ready
Rabbit visit, and then have your kids create a
disaster preparedness safety handbook to keep in the
classroom.
