Volunteering is a central facet of life in
Nashville. As the local leader on
volunteerism, we work with a variety of
organizations who work community-wide to promote and
support service and civic involvement.
Center for Nonprofit Management
The Center for Nonprofit Management (CNM) helps
nonprofit organizations through education,
consulting, research, evaluation, and recognition.
CNM and Hands On Nashville collaborate to provide
consulting services in volunteer management. The
combined expertise of HON and CNM provides
nonprofits with consulting in three areas of
volunteer management. These include start-up, for
organizations just beginning to formalize a
framework for managing volunteers; program audits,
for organizations with an existing volunteer
program; and specialized programs for organizations
seeking to strengthen a specific area of their
program. For more
information, visit
www.cnm.org.
Community Resource Center

place" for community service, the Tennessee
Commission on National and Community Service (TCNCS)
collaborates with Hands On Nashville on several
fronts. For the commission-sponsored Team Tennessee
AmeriCorps programs, TCNCS partners with Hands On
Nashville as the new home for Nashville alumni
members of AmeriCorps. For TCNCS service-learning
workshops, Hands On Nashville coordinates
"immersion" service projects for teachers in
training. Finally, Hands On Nashville takes its
place as a leader in the statewide volunteer center
exchanges sponsored by the Commission related to
days of service, homeland security volunteering,
outreach for persons with disabilities to serve,
volunteer recognition and other issues of common
interest. For more information visit

United Way 211

Both United Way 2-1-1 and Hands on Nashville serve
as a link between the public and community agencies,
with 2-1-1 making referrals to callers using a
database of more than 4,000 health and human
services programs, and Hands on Nashville serving as
the expert in volunteer information and referral in
Davidson County. When 2-1-1 receives a call from a

refer that person to HON. We believe that this
collaborative effort is important, and look forward
to continuing our work with Hands on Nashville to
build more vibrant communities. To learn more

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Program
The Nashville Wealth Building Alliance (NWBA)
is a community-wide group of over 175 partner
organizations dedicated to promoting financial
stability for low- and moderate-income individuals
and families in Davidson County. Working with the
IRS and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
program, the NWBA helps provide no-cost tax
preparation through the “Earn It! Keep It! Save It!”
Campaign. Through free volunteer tax assistance, the
campaign helps families claim these credits and
avoid high-cost commercial tax preparers that often
charge excessive fees. Hands On Nashville is proud
to partner with the NWBA to help recruit and manage
volunteers for this important initiative that served
over 4,000 families and returned $7,069,044 in
federal refunds to the local economy in the 2004 tax
season. To learn more about the Nashville Wealth
Building Alliance and the VITA program, visit

11,000 people of all ages and backgrounds are
helping to solve problems and build stronger
communities in 66 projects across Tennessee. Serving
through local nonprofits and schools, national

coordinate service-learning and after-school
programs, build homes, organize neighborhood watch
groups, clean streams, recruit volunteers, and do
other things to improve and strengthen communities.
Whether serving full- or half-time, as a part of
AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America, or the Senior
Corps, citizens of Tennessee are making schools
better, children healthier, streets safer, and the
