Hands On Nashville
Day 2008
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What kind of projects will we do? All
projects are at Metro Nashville Public Schools and
include activities like painting, landscaping,
cleaning, organizing, repairs and educational tool
development. All supplies are provided and no
special skills are required.
Can my team work together? Yes! As you
consider the project sites, we ask you to choose a
site appropriate for your team size. Some of the
project sites require fewer than 25 volunteers and
other sites accommodate large groups. In most cases
teams are able to volunteer together at a project
site.
Do I need to bring supplies? All supplies
needed to complete the projects are provided. Your
Project Coordinator can advise if any additional
supplies such as gloves, extra rakes, wheelbarrows,
etc. could be helpful.
How/when can we register for HON Day?
Registration is available on-line at www.hon.org.
Registration closes on September 24. After initial
registration, you can go back on-line to add or
delete team members as needed until September 24.
What is the age requirement for HON Day
volunteers? HON Day is an adult work-day and is
not developmentally appropriate for young children.
For most project sites the minimum age for
volunteers is 18. This year several projects sites
will be designated as “kid friendly” and will allow
children 10 years or older to participate if they
are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Can my family and/or friends participate?
Yes, as long as they meet the age requirement and
register for the event on or before September 24.
When/how can I choose my project site? You
can choose your project on-line starting in August.
If you need help doing this, please contact Hands On
Nashville 298-1108 (Malinda ext 101 or Amy ext 110).
What should volunteers wear/bring to Hands On
Nashville Day? Dress in comfortable clothes that
can tolerate water, paint, or dirt. Closed-toed
footwear is highly recommended. Dress appropriate
for the weather that day. We also suggest bringing
work gloves or gardening gloves if possible.
What if it rains? You'll get wet! HON Day
happens rain or shine. All projects have rain
contingencies and activities may be modified. If it
looks like rain, bring rain gear and notify your
team to do the same.
Are there any other perks? Absolutely! In
addition to taking part in Nashville’s largest
annual day of service to Metro Schools, HON Day
participants also receive a 2008 Hands On Nashville
Day t-shirt and invitation to the Celebration –
after party at LIMELIGHT from 12pm-2pm. This party
includes lunch, entertainment, door prizes, and
great give-a-ways.
What does the registration fee go towards?
HON Day not only engages the community in service to
Metro Schools, but also raises needed funds to
support Hands On Nashville's year-round work. Your
$25 HON Day registration fee allows us to provide
volunteer support to over 200 nonprofits, government
agencies, and schools in Middle Tennessee. Many
teams raise money for additional donations which are
greatly appreciated. Prizes are given to acknowledge
the top three team and individual contributors.
What’s the difference between a Team Leader
and a Project Coordinator? A Team Leader is
responsible for recruiting a team of volunteers and
communicating information to team members. A Project
Coordinator (PC) is a volunteer assigned to each
project site who serves as the school liaison. PCs
meet the Team Leader and volunteers on site and
manage the project. Some people serve as both Team
Leader and Project Coordinator at their site.
