Members of Hands On Nashville’s Youth Volunteer Corps completed a service-learning project at The Lost Boys Foundation in celebration of Global Youth Service Day On April 24. With the help of artists and retired Glencliff High School teachers, Linda Anderson and Barbara Cox, these teens painted a mural and covered graffiti on the exterior of The Lost Boy Foundation’s building. During the process, volunteers interacted with Sudanese men served by the Foundation. These men, known as “The Lost Boys,” are survivors of a 1987 civil war that drove male children from their villages to wander thousands of miles before reaching a Kenyan refugee camp. Approximately 150 Lost Boys now reside in Nashville.
Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes the millions of children and youth who improve their communities. Established in 1988, it is the largest service event in the world and is now celebrated in more than 100 countries. Hands On Nashville coordinates an annual Global Youth Service Day activity in Middle Tennessee.
