MARY CATHERINE STROBEL AWARDS Back To Main
The Mary Catherine Strobel Volunteers of the Year Awards is one of the key programs in fulfilling the Hands On Nashville mission. These awards were established in honor of Nashville native Mary Catherine Strobel who selflessly aided hundreds of homeless, hungry, and less fortunate people throughout Middle Tennessee. Today her family is honored to bestow this award upon others who exemplify Mary Catherine's generous spirit.

On April 18, 2007 civic, corporate and nonprofit leaders gathered at the Cool Springs Marriott to honor over 200  volunteers from across Middle Tennessee. Volunteers were honored in the following categories:

  • Community Wide Volunteer – Individuals eligible for this award are involved in a variety of community activities. The collective effect of their work has impact on the agencies themselves and the community at large.
    Nominees in this category for 2007 include:
    Geneva Bell for her work with Make A Difference Day, Mount Olive Cemetary, and programs for youth in Clarksville, TN
    Rita McDonald for her work with the Northwest YMCA, Metro Schools, Senior Citizens, Boy Scouts, and Book 'Em
    Maggie Samuchin for her work with NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally ill)
    Mark Smith for his work with The Next Door, Brentwood YMCA, and Salvation Army
    Shirley Taylor for her work with Red Cross, Salvation Army Homeless Shelter, Ajax Senior Citizens Center, Customs House Museum, and more
    WINNER: Mark Smith
     

  • Direct Service Volunteer – Individuals eligible for this award have made a long-term commitment to an agency. Their service is considered extraordinary with emphasis on longevity and focus as well as impact to the agency and its clients.
    Nominees in this category for 2007 include:
    Marion Couch for her work with the Nashville Symphony
    Sue Lamberth for her work with Mercy Ministries and Tennessee Wildlife Federation
    Terri Purser for her work with Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt
    Cassie Stewart for her work with the Literary Council of Sumner County
    Marjorie Whitaker for her work with Skyline Madison Campus

  • ·Volunteer Group – Groups eligible for this award are representatives of civic, membership, congregation, or corporate groups that volunteer together for a specific cause or issue.
    Nominees in this category for 2007 include:
    The Harpeth Hall Knitting Club
    Nashville Habitat for Humanity Supervisors on Site
    100 Oaks Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Volunteers
    Oasis Center’s International Teen Outreach Program at Hillsboro & Glencliff High Schools Students of CiViL Groups at Stratford High School
    WINNER: Students of CiViL Groups at Stratford High School
     

  • Volunteer Innovator – Individuals or groups eligible for this award have responded creatively to an unmet community need by designing a volunteer program, practice or response, or by innovation to an existing program or agency.
    Nominess in this category for 2007 include:
    Alive Hospice "Tell Me Your Story" Volunteers
    Sandra Eubanks for her work with Harvest Outreach Ministry and The Minnie Pearl Cancer Foundation
    Dr. Keith Hagan for his work with Baptist Healing Trust
    Jeanne Marchetti for her work with Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
    WAVES MCHRA Meals on Wheels, Fairview
    Dr. Barbara Engelhardt Wilson
    for her work with Renewal House

  • Youth Volunteer – Individuals eligible for this award are children and young adults ages 5-22. This award recognizes young individuals who incorporate volunteerism into their life and serve as an inspiration to others.
    Nominees in this category for 2007include:
    Hannah Cornfield for her work with CommunityNashville, MTA, USN Peer Educators
    Taylor Cox for her work with the Arthritis Foundation
    John Robert Howland for his work with Bethlehem Centers of Nashville
    Rachel McCreery for her work with Discovery Center at Murfree Spring
    Yufan Yan for her work with St. Luke's Community House
