Nutrition/Public Health Internship
*Currently seeking student interns for the Summer of 2015 semester and Fall of 2015 semester*
AGENCY DESCRIPTION:
Domestic Violence Program & Sexual Assault Services is a non-profit organization located in Rutherford County, based in Murfreesboro, serving victims of domestic and/or sexual violence. We are committed to ending violence and discrimination in the lives of victims suffering the pain, fear, and shame of domestic and/or sexual violence. We protect victims, prevent violence, and empower survivors. Our free services include safe shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, LEP advocacy, transitional housing, elderly advocacy, and follow-up services.
NUTRITION/PUBLIC HEALTH INTERN RESPONSIBILIES:
Under the supervision of the program coordinator, the intern will participate in a variety of tasks within the organization, offering exposure to the different components of the Food & Nutrition Program. Concentration areas can be developed as the internship progresses or is continued into a second semester.
Enrolled in a Nutrition, Community & Public Health, Dietician, or other related program. Recent grads also accepted.
SKILL REQUIRED:
• Basic knowledge of a healthy diet.
• Ability to draw boundaries with clients while also maintaining compassion.
• Ability to maintain health standards during food preparation.
• Ability to assist clients in learning basic healthy nutrition.
• Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, and flexible.
SCHEDULE:
Flexible. Most work is available Monday - Friday between the hours of 10:00am - 6:00pm.

- Assist Food & Nutrition Coordinator in preparing healthy snacks and dinner for the families living in safe shelter.
- Develop healthy and creative meal plans with the available food products.
- Create informational brochures/materials for the families living in safe shelter on eating healthy on a budget, eating healthy for a specific health problem, grocery shopping tips, cooking tips, or other related topics.
- Assist in leading small groups for adults or children on nutrition related topics.
- Community outreach to gain support for the food program.
- Assist in maintaining all health codes and upkeep of the shelter food program.
- Assist in documentation for grant purposes.
- Assist in annual shelter garden (during season).
