English Innovations - North Nashville

English Innovations® is a blended social learning model that combines English language learning in a collaborative, supportive classroom environment with online tools that enable self-paced, independent learning. Students will be loaned a tablet for both classroom use and independent learning, and the program will use a combination of interactive classroom instruction and online learning games. In addition, students enrolled in these classes will meet the educational requirement to apply for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a program created for young undocumented immigrants that meet a specific criteria to receive a protection from deportation, and work authorization for two years.
 
Volunteers will play an important role in the learning process by helping build the confidence and conversational English skills of students.
 
Volunteer Expectations:
  • Commitment to volunteering in at least one class per week (approx. 2-3 hrs per week)
  • Facilitate and actively participate in small group discussions and activities.
  • Provide support for students as they navigate the online games Interact in a friendly and patient manner with students from different cultural backgrounds, students with various levels of language proficiency, and students who may have disabilities.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse environment community, social justice, and the immigrant rights movement.
  • Comfort with basic technology including email, Skype, internet, etc.
