McGruder Community Garden Work Day with The Nashville Food Project

Work Day Volunteers get their hands dirty (literally) alongside staff while supporting The Nashville Food Project’s urban agriculture programming through set workdays supporting specific projects at a designated TNFP garden site. Whether broad forking unbroken ground to develop new community garden plots and perennial beds, assembling benches and compost bins, or spreading gravel for new paths, you can be certain to get your body moving in a gorgeous fresh air setting while supporting the work of increasing land access for folks wanting to grow their own food!

Project Specifics:

McGruder Community Garden, nestled behind The McGruder Family Resource Center in North Nashville, is a space where neighbors take ownership of their own plots to grow vegetables for themselves, friends, and families. These gardeners either live nearby, work near the garden, attend school in the neighborhood, or are actively involved in the surrounding community. The garden's beautiful infrastructure has been in place since 2009, and in 2014 the Food Project began a partnership with McGruder Family Resource Center to increase community participation. Hundreds of community members and volunteer groups have since worked together to support and maintain the garden beds, perennial plants, and the adjacent fruit orchard.

What to Expect:
Garden tasks at McGruder Community Garden vary with the seasons and often include site management tasks such as weeding, mulching, and infrastructure maintenance. Volunteers work with designated staff to support the critical needs of the program.

Before You Arrive:

We ask that all participants wear clothes that can get dirty/sweaty, closed-toed shoes, and bring a face mask. Please bring a filled water bottle and any other supplies you need to stay comfortable outside (sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, a jacket if cold, etc).

Any participants under the age of 18 must bring a signed waiver to their volunteer experience: www.thenashvillefoodproject.org/youth-volunteer-waiver
