English Innovations - Antioch
English Innovations® is a blended social learning model that combines English language learning in a collaborative, supportive classroom environment with online tools that enable self-paced, independent learning. Students will be loaned a tablet for both classroom use and independent learning, and the program will use a combination of interactive classroom instruction and online learning games. Volunteers will play an important role in the learning process by helping build the confidence and conversational English skills of students.
The Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) will conduct the free classes over the spring cycle, from February 13-April 28, 2017. Students can enroll in either morning or evening classes, and volunteers can choose one class a week to volunteer with.
Volunteer Expectations:
● Commitment to volunteering in at least one class per week (approx. 2.5 hrs per week)
● Facilitate and actively participate in small group discussions and activities
● Provide support for students as they navigate the online games
● Interact in a friendly and patient manner with students from different cultural backgrounds, students with various levels of language proficiency, and students who may have disabilities.
● Commitment to working with a diverse environment community, social justice, and the immigrant rights movement
● Comfort with basic technology including email, Skype, internet, etc.
