Grow Gardens with The Nashville Food Project (Haywood, South Nash)

The Nashville Food Project’s Haywood Lane garden supports Growing Together, TNFP’s market garden program, which expands access and opportunity to growers from agrarian backgrounds. Through this program, farmers gain access to land, inputs, seeds and training, building upon their existing skills to earn personal income through the sale of their produce.

This garden space is multipurpose as it functions as a classroom and experiential learning space for the farmers and their families, a space to reconnect with the land and cultural traditions, and a community space to connect with each other and build relationships. By helping TNFP's staff maintain the communal spaces and ongoing projects, volunteers play an integral role in the success of the market garden program.

Garden tasks at Haywood Lane vary with the seasons and often include site management tasks such as weeding, mulching, mowing, as well as planting, weeding, composting and harvesting in our demonstration plot. We love to share all sorts of gardening knowledge while we work. You will have the chance to get your hands (and everything else) dirty, so dress for the occasion. We recommend boots or closed toe shoes and layers if the weather is chilly or sunscreen and hats when it is warm. Garden projects will occur rain or shine (with the exception of lightning!) so bring a rain jacket and hat. We’ll provide the gloves, but you’re always welcome to bring your own. We can’t wait to welcome you to one of our gardens!

Whether you have never stepped foot in a garden or are an experienced farmer, we welcome and encourage all skill levels to join us in working our gardens!

Please note that due to the natural setting of our garden plots, there is uneven terrain that may be difficult to navigate for folks with mobility limitations. Additionally, while there are port-a-pot facilities for participant use, they are not ADA accessible at this site. If you need special accommodations to participate, please don't hesitate to reach out to elizabeth@thenashvillefoodproject.org prior to your volunteer time and our team will do our best to make necessary arrangements.

TNFP strives to create a welcoming environment for all people. Our mission, values, and statement of anti-racism can be found here: https://www.thenashvillefoodproject.org/learn-more
