House Captain - Home Improvement Projects

Rebuilding Together Nashville (RTN) seeks skilled and semi-skilled construction volunteers to work in partnership with RTN staff to prepare for and lead home improvement projects. House Captains should be comfortable with executing a variety of basic home improvement tasks and with leading unskilled volunteers. House Captains commit to completing at least two projects annually. Each project requires two hours of assessment and planning with RTN staff and 8-10 hours on the job site.

RTN partners with low-income homeowners who need home improvements that will make their living environments safe and healthy. Homeowners must meet basic eligibility and income requirements, and a household member must qualify as a senior citizen, disabled or a veteran. RTN recruits semi-skilled and unskilled volunteers to complete basic home improvement projects, and hires contractors for complex home improvements.

RTN completes approximately 25 home improvement projects each year. Projects are usually completed between March and November and may occur on weekdays or weekends. House Captains are matched with specific projects based on their availability and skills. Work scopes vary based on each home's and homeowner's needs. Common volunteer home improvement tasks include building or improving wheelchair ramps, decks or railings; repairing water damaged cabinets and flooring; installing light fixtures or new flooring; plumbing repairs and upgrades; energy-efficiency improvements such as installing insulation and air-sealing; and painting.

When you express interest in this volunteer opportunity, you will receive a follow up phone call and screening from RTN staff members who will provide more specific details about the opportunity.
