Mobile Meals "Pit Crew" with The Nashville Food Project at St. Luke's

ATTENTION:
Out of a commitment to collective community care, all volunteers, and visitors to TNFP’s indoor spaces will be required to indicate that they have been fully vaccinated, have received a negative COVID test within 72 hours of entering our spaces, or fall into an exempt category via the ADA. Masks will continue to be required of anyone within indoor spaces, covering both nose and mouth for the entirety of your visit.

Did you know that The Nashville Food Project stewards a second commercial kitchen at St. Luke's Community House? We'd love to have you join us!

Project Specifics and What To Expect:
At our St. Luke’s kitchen, our partnership with home-delivered mobile meal service to seniors means that our job isn’t done until all those carefully prepared dishes are portioned, packaged, bagged, and out the door! Want to put the mobile in mobile meals? Our Mobile Meals Pit Crew Volunteers make sure that meals are ready for partner pick-ups! You might scoop, slice, and stack, to make sure that when one of our meal recipients opens their delivered meal, it’s something that would make our mamas proud. After mobile meals heads out the door, you may find yourself slicing, dicing, or immersed in other simple prep tasks to get fresh ingredients ready to be incorporated into future meals!

Almost 15% of Davidson county’s older residents (over 65 years of age) live below the poverty line. The United Health Foundation’s Senior Report cites a lack of home-delivered meals as one of its major challenges facing seniors in the community. These facts, in combination with the new reality that senior residents are among the most vulnerable to COVID-19, has guided us in our current approach to our senior meal service. We expect that the pandemic will only serve to exacerbate the inequities that are already disproportionately born by this age group of our population. In 2020, we served close to 41,000 meals to approximately 1,3000 seniors through almost 20 community partnerships!

Before You Arrive:
On-site staff lead each meal prep session and provide gloves, aprons, and all instructions. As you will be working in a commercial kitchen setting, we ask that all participants wear closed-toed shoes and have any long hair pulled back throughout their time with us.

Any participants under the age of 18 must bring a signed waiver to their volunteer experience: www.thenashvillefoodproject.org/youth-volunteer-waiver

Participants will have access to an All-Gender restroom during their service time and the kitchen is accessible by a ramp for those with mobility limitations. If you need special accommodations to participate, please reach out to elizabeth@thenashvillefoodproject.org prior to your service experience so we can make appropriate arrangements! Stools and cut gloves are available upon request. Sessions are facilitated in English at this time. For additional accommodation inquiries please reach out to the opportunity leader below.

In our pursuit of a vibrant community food system that is relational, ecological, and accessible to all, our staff has committed to the necessary work of identifying, discussing, and challenging racism. For more information about our values and statement of anti-racism visit our website.
