Virtual Tutoring #VirtualVolunteer

About Us

Did you know that 78% of students in Metro Nashville Public Schools can’t do math at their current grade level?  Or that only 15.6% low-income students at Nashville's inner-city schools can read and write at their current grade level?  Furthermore, coronavirus has meant missing 3 months of in-school education, and for students without ways to access online learning, the impact of this gap is much more pronounced.  Water Walkers is helping turn those numbers around and give kids the confidence and abilities to create a brighter future for themselves.

Because of coronavirus, we haven’t been able to operate our normal in-person tutoring program.  But we have remained committed to the education of students who are in need of help.  That has meant providing weekly education resources and even buying full curriculum books for our students.  And we are now offering virtual tutoring and interaction for kids throughout the summer to try and minimize the damage done by the missed time in class.

We are looking for volunteers who are interested in helping to bridge the educational gap.  This would mean scheduling time with 1 or 2 students once or twice a week to check in on them, help them with any problems they might have, read with them, and remind them that they have people who support and believe in them.

Virtual Tutoring

Our tutoring sessions do not follow a concrete structure and may be molded around the needs of the student you’re working with.  Each visit should be between 30-60 minutes, and include things like following the child’s progress in their curriculum book, reading a book with them, using flash cards, asking about their day and how they’re feeling, encouraging them to process thoughts and emotions, and spending time encouraging and mentoring them.  We’ll provide you with the contact information to schedule the meetings, but the time and availability will depend on what works for the tutor, the student, and parent/guardian.

Tutoring is a fun, rewarding opportunity to make a significant difference on the trajectory of a child's life.  Most of the students we serve are drastically behind in math and reading.  So if you're worried about being knowledgeable enough, don't be!  If you can read, write, and do basic math, you'll be more than fine!  Given the difficulties of virtual learning, we are only able to accept tutors who can serve on a regular basis to develop relationships and consistency with the kids.  Contact us today for more information!
