Distribute food with MNPS/Second Harvest

Community Achieves has teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle TN to provide weekly food support to MNPS families. We are looking for volunteers to help staff the weekly distribution events, and ensure our families are fed during the Covid19 crisis. Volunteer duties include:

· Unload the delivery truck of food at each school site

· Assemble boxes

· Pack boxes with food items for families

· Load boxes into family cars

To combat the heat all sites have tents set up and water for volunteers.

These events will take place on Wednesdays, for the duration of school closures. Volunteer hours can range from 8am-3pm, with some school sites having a later start time (depending on the scheduled delivery time of the food truck to the school).

Available Shifts:

Antioch High - 10:30 am - 2 pm

Glencliff High - 10 am - 1:30 pm

Haywood Elementary - 8:30 am - 11:00 am & 11:00 am  - 1:30 pm (two shifts)

Hillwood High - 8:30 am -1:00 pm

JE Moss Elementary - 8:45 am - 12:30 pm

McGavock High - 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

We encourage all event volunteers to practice "safe health" while our city deals with the Covid19 crisis. This includes washing your hands frequently, staying 6 feet from one another whenever possible, wiping down surfaces regularly using products provided on-site, and using door stops on doors within the building to keep them open and prevent everyone from touching them unnecessarily. Most importantly, we ask that if you are experiencing any symptoms of the Covid19 virus, that you choose to stay home and not volunteer. If you have any protective gear of your own (gloves, masks, etc.), we highly suggest that you wear those things to the event. We will try to provide those items each time, but it is very possible that shipments can be delayed due to the high request of these items across the country, and they may not make it in time for each week's distribution event.

In accordance with Mayor John Cooper’s Roadmap for Reopening Nashville, Hands On Nashville recommends the following guidelines for volunteering:

  • Individuals belonging to the following groups should not volunteer for in-person opportunities: ages 65 and up, those with elevated health risk or compromised immune systems, anyone who is feeling unwell (or who has been exposed to/is caring for someone who is sick or has a compromised immune system).

  • Volunteers who attend projects should take recommended precautions, including maintaining distances between themselves and other people; practicing hand-washing and sanitation of spaces; wearing gloves, masks, and other protective gear; etc. As always, consult a medical professional should you begin to feel unwell at any point during or after a project.

If you decide not to attend a project, please log in to hon.org and remove yourself from the opportunity ahead of time so that another volunteer may have a chance to fill your slot. If you have any trouble with this, email hon@hon.org and we’ll be happy to help!

Please be aware that your project may be canceled with short notice. Projects are subject to change depending on shifting guidelines and circumstances. We appreciate your understanding.
