Tutoring and Education Support @ Dismas House

Dismas house is looking for a tutoring and education volunteer to help Dismas Residents acquire knowledge or skills in one or more given areas.

Examples of tutoring needs are preparation for the HiSET exam, college placement exam, college applications and academic support, resume and cover letter writing, general computer and technology skills, and internet navigation.

Volunteers interested in this position will be entered into the tutoring list.  Dismas House will call volunteers to set up resident tutoring as needs arise.  Once a tutoring relationship between a volunteer and a resident has been established, it is the responsibility of the tutoring pair to set up appointments and maintain contact as necessary. Tutoring can be done in person or virtually.

Tutoring options could be individually assigned, or a combination based on your skills and our residents’ needs:

  • HiSET tutoring, studying, and exam preparation.
  • College application and academic support
  • Basic technology – i.e. cell phones, social media, apps
  • Basic computer skills – i.e. Microsoft office, emailing, sending attachments, etc.
  • Goal Setting
  • Career Planning
  • Business Advising
  • Qualifications:
  • Minimum Age: 18 years
  • Proficiency or experience in one of the above fields.
  • Previous experience as a teacher/tutor preferred.
  • Patience, and a desire to impart knowledge.

This position will be in person or virtual as required. We are asking for volunteers to commit to at least 1-2 hours per week.

Dismas House staff will be available to address volunteer needs, though direct supervision will be minimal. The tutor is responsible for honoring all commitments and being on time for all appointments.  If a tutor is unable to make a scheduled tutoring session, they must notify the resident or the staff at Dismas House with as much advance notice as possible.

Build a new friendship as you help a fellow community member strive for success. Dismas House provides materials for testing practice (GED/HiSET books etc.) and has an on-site computer lab for computer skills work. All residents have access to a laptop.

The mission of Dismas House is to foster community awareness and understanding of the challenges and obstacles formerly incarcerated men face upon reentry by providing
