Mask and Social Distancing Ambassador

The Health Department is part of the Metro Government and is charged with protecting, improving, and sustaining health in Nashville.  With the current COVID crisis, part of our efforts are centered around educating and encouraging the public to wear masks and stay socially distant.  We have discovered that people are more compliant with these protocols when gently reminded of them by public health volunteers.  This work has great impact for our community by helping to stop the spread of COVID in Nashville.

To do this Metro Public Health Department needs your help encouraging the public to wear their facemasks and stay socially distanced. Volunteers will interact with the public to remind them of current county health and safety guidelines. Volunteers will NOT be responsible for enforcement of said rules.

Volunteers will be out in the community in groups, and will have a Health Department representative present if the need for assistance should arise. When masks are available, they will also have free masks to distribute to those who want one.

This opportunity takes place at one of four locations in the greater Nashville area. Which location is choosen is based on a rotation, and local activities calendar. Once you have "signed up" below a Metro Nashville Health Department representative will be in touch about which of the four locations you will be assigned to for your shift.

Volunteers will be in public, and thus will need to wear a mask.

Volunteers should dress casual, but presentable attire as they will be representing the Health Department. Volunteers will receive “Public Health Nashville Volunteer” shirts and hats.

In accordance with Mayor John Cooper’s Roadmap for Reopening Nashville, Hands On Nashville recommends the following guidelines for volunteering:
  • Individuals belonging to the following groups should not volunteer for in-person opportunities: ages 65 and up, those with elevated health risk or compromised immune systems, anyone who is feeling unwell (or who has been exposed to/is caring for someone who is sick or has a compromised immune system).
  • Volunteers who attend projects should take recommended precautions, including maintaining distances between themselves and other people; practicing hand-washing and sanitation of spaces; wearing gloves, masks, and other protective gear; etc. As always, consult a medical professional should you begin to feel unwell at any point during or after a project.

If you decide not to attend a project, please log in to hon.org and remove yourself from the opportunity ahead of time so that another volunteer may have a chance to fill your slot. If you have any trouble with this, email hon@hon.org and we’ll be happy to help!

Please be aware that your project may be canceled with short notice. Projects are subject to change depending on shifting guidelines and circumstances. We appreciate your understanding.
