Shelby Park - Cave Spring Maintenance

Help us care for one of Shelby Park's most beautiful hidden treasures. This unique cave is home to a spring that flows through a rain garden, and we need your help preserving its beauty. We will work on weeding, debris removal, rock placement, general cleanup, and some planting!

The cave and the surrounding concrete steps have been a part of Shelby Park since the very beginning, way back in 1912! This site serves as a host to myriad critters and plants and is a nice little spot for park patrons to enjoy a quiet moment in nature. With your help, we can keep this site healthy and thriving for years to come!

Please wear close-toed shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and bring a water bottle if you have one. Gloves, tools, and additional water will be provided. Port-a-potties are onsite located downhill of the work site as well.

This work will require bending and carrying heavy tools downhill and over uneven terrain.

Founded in 2008, the Friends of Shelby is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, enhancement, and promotion of Shelby Park and Shelby Bottoms. It works to protect the natural and historical integrity of the area by supporting appropriate recreational activities, maintaining and enhancing its features, promoting programs that inspire appreciation and conservation of the Park and Bottoms, and advocating for a level playing field for the various user groups.
