Opportunity Details

Weed Wrangle at Antioch Park with Mill Creek Watershed Association

Mill Creek Watershed Association and Friends of Mill Creek Greenway are hosting a Weed Wrangle to remove invasive, non-native plants.  We will focus on mainly Chinese privet and bush honeysuckle, from both sides of the Greenway trail, starting near the main parking lot and working down the trail.

We will use Uprooters/Weed Wrenches, mattocks, shovels, and loppers. Volunteers should bring their own work gloves.   Energy bars, and bulk water will be provided (please bring your own reusable water bottles).  To supplement what we provide, volunteers should bring sturdy shovels, mattocks and loppers, if available, along with safety glasses or eyeglasses.

Volunteers will be using sturdy (some heavy) and sharp tools that will need to be used safely.  There will be a safety talk before work starts, and host organizations will monitor volunteers during work hours. Please wear sturdy work shoes or boots, long pants and shirt, dressing in layers appropriate for the weather.

Mill Creek Watershed Association (MCWA) and Friends of Mill Creek Greenway (FMCGW) will be the on-site hosts for this event, which is being organized county-wide by the Garden Club of Nashville and Weed Wrangle Nashville.  MCWA is working to protect and inform about Mill Creek, and FMCGW is working to protect and improve Mill Creek Greenway.  The work will allow native trees and shrubs to grow and will benefit native wildlife that rely on these plants.

Weed Wrangle®, is a one-day, citywide, volunteer effort to help rescue our public parks and green spaces from invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines and flowering plants.

Hands On Nashville (HON) encourages all volunteers follow CDC guidelines by getting vaccinated and wearing a mask indoors, including at service opportunities.

However, this project is led by our partner organization, and they will determine COVID safety measures at the event. If you have questions, please reach out to the opportunity coordinator listed below.

If you feel unsafe at a volunteer project, please reach out to hon@hon.org or share your feedback in our post-service survey. Your feedback is invaluable – it will be shared with our partners and used to inform future policy decisions.
