Opportunity Details

Invasives Removal Crew Leader

Overview:
Are you looking to take on a leadership role that allows you to preserve and enhance your public lands? Do you want to help restore the natural environment of Shelby Park and Bottoms? Look no further!

This fall and winter Friends of Shelby is continuing our campaign to remove invasive plant species from Beech Grove Hill in Shelby Park and Bottoms as part of an effort to restore ecological health to our forests and bottomlands. Invasive species such as bush honeysuckle and privet are not native to Middle Tennessee but thrive in this area. As they grow and propagate, they crowd out native species, preventing native seedlings from maturing. Native species have evolved to play unique and invaluable roles in our Middle Tennessee ecosystems. By growing where native species should, invasive species invariably reduce the health of our ecosystems and make them less resilient.

Our invasives removal program hopes to address the negative impact of invasive plant species. This effort includes removing invasive plants and encouraging the growth of native species, including planting native trees and shrubs. As we embark on this project, we need community leaders to join us!

Brief Description of Duties:
Invasives Removal Crew Leaders (IRCLs) will be trained on invasive species identification and removal, and volunteer management. Then, IRCLs will join Friends of Shelby staff to help lead volunteers in invasive species removal. Keep in mind: invasive removal is physically demanding work, as most of our events will solely include human-powered removal and disposal of invasive plants. If this is something you enjoy and are able to do, then this could be a great fit!

Time Commitment:
IRCLs will be asked to attend a 2- hour training where they will receive instruction on invasive species identification, use of tools, and removal techniques.
After training, IRCLs will have the opportunity to help facilitate approximately 2+ invasive removal projects through the fall and winter of 2023 - 2024. Each event can be expected to last 2-3 hours, including clean-up and a quick debrief after each project. Toward the middle to end of February, we will take a break from invasives removal until later in the spring.

All IRCLs will receive a Friends of Shelby volunteer t-shirt.

Training Dates:
Once you express interest in this position, we will contact you with a few options for training dates, likely to occur in late August or early September. Thanks!
