Opportunity Details

Weed Wrangle at Fort Negley Park

Help preserve Fort Negley Park by eliminating invasive plants from the stonework and open space. Cleaning invasive plants will allow native plants to thrive and improve site stability and aesthetics.

Volunteers will:
  • remove invasive plants using shears and loppers
  • remove vegetation and pile in designated areas
  • remove debris that harbors invasive plant growth

Supplies will be on hand, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their favorite tools and gloves. Volunteers should wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and comfortable long-sleeve shirts and pants and are encouraged to dress in layers as the day will likely start off cool. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle.

Fort Negley Park is a Union fortification from the Civil War.  Built by free, self-emancipated, and enslaved African Americans who were largely pressed into labor, For Negley soon became a bastion of liberty to those fleeing area plantations.  Clearing overgrown vegetation will allow visitors to focus on the story of Nashville's role in the emancipation and citizenship struggle.

Weed Wrangle®, is a one-day, citywide, volunteer effort to help rescue our public parks and green spaces from invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines and flowering plants.
